Psalm 56:3 – Whenever I am afraid I will trust in you.
In whom do you place your highest trust? Is it in your spouse? Your best friend? Maybe an elder or pastor? Usually it is someone close to us, someone that we put our confidence in, someone we rely on. The thing is… those in whom we place our trust will sooner or later let us down. It doesn’t have to be a big thing, it can be something very small. But it’s human nature. Actually, it’s more than that…it’s our fallen nature.
The good news is that there is one person who will never violate our trust. He is the One in which we can place one hundred percent of our confidence. In Psalm 56, we read David’s plea to God. David is in a dark place, enemies are surrounding him, he is lacking human support, his future is uncertain. Yet he continually repeats “In God I have put my trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”
The hardest part of trusting God is that we have to knowingly (and willingly) throw up our hands and say “Thy will be done.” That 100% confidence in God being the captain of our ship means that we have to resist the urge to grab the wheel when we find ourselves heading in a direction we don’t like.
Call to Action
Corrie ten Boom encouraged “Never be afraid to trust an unknown future to a known God.” If you are struggling with placing your trust in God or if you are in the midst of adversity, I recommend reading the book “Trusting God: Even When Life Hurts” by Jerry Bridges. It is a book I personally took comfort in many years ago when we lost a baby late term. No one thinks twice about trusting God when things are going beautifully, it is only when He shakes up our world that we can join David in saying “In God I have put my trust, I will not be afraid.”
